Photographers in July (Pittsburgh, PA) — Filmmakers Galleries is featuring the documentary photographs of Jeff Swensen and Dan Buczynski through July 24, 2005. Both are local artists. A reception will be held on Friday, July 8 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. It is free and open to the public. Swensen is a photojournalist whose work has been published in more than 200 newspapers and magazines including Newsweek and Sports Illustrated. "I tend to like to photograph around the edges of a situation mostly,” says Swensen. "There, all moments along the edges of life, something more real comes out. I've been very lucky to meet all these people and when I look at them on the wall, the moments all come back, the sounds, smells, the things that people said almost like a movie. I found most of these moments in my back yard, Pittsburgh. I've gone away at times, but it is my home. These are Pittsburghers on the walls, and they've given me welcome access to their lives." Buczynski is a graphic designer by trade, but loves his camera. He says, "I can rarely be seen without it strapped to my back. I've accumulated tens of thousands of photos." His work has been shown around town at events such as AMP (at the Andy Warhol museum), Flux 9 (at the Beehive in Oakland), Flux 12 (as part of the Pittsburgh Signs project), Hothouse (as part of the Pittsburgh Signs project), and Art All Night in Lawrenceville. Filmmakers Galleries are located at 477 Melwood Avenue, North Oakland. Open Monday through Friday, noon to 5:00, and weekend evenings.
