Three Rivers
Film Festival Announces Polish Poster Art
Plakat! Poster Art from
Poland is presented at Filmmakers
Galleries from Nov. 7, 2008 through Jan. 10, 2009, as part of the Polish series
in the Three Rivers Film Festival. Surveying work from 1990 to present, these
fine art works continue the successes of Polish graphic Òart of the streetÓ
that began at the end of the 19th century. Because they are utilitarian,
posters are often relegated to the graphic arts. Polish posters, however,
breach the boundaries of poster design, elevating them to an art form. This exhibit, featuring Ònew waveÓ
Polish socio-political artists, was curated by Dr. Irene Kabala and Krzysztof
Dydo. It is presented in partnership with the University Museum, College of
Fine Arts, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and underwritten by The
Kosciuszko Foundation of New York.
The Opening Reception
is held in conjunction with the guest appearance of Polish
director Jerzy Stuhr and presentation of his film, Twists of Fate,
on Wednesday, Nov. 12 (8:00pm
showtime) at Pittsburgh Filmmakers. The reception will take place after the screening. An
actor, screenwriter and director, Stuhr has won a host of Polish and
international film awards, including the 2005 Life Achievement Award at the
Venice Film Festival. During his distinguished career heÕs worked alongside
such legends as Krzysztof Kieślowski, Agnieszka Holland, Andrzej Wajda and
Krzysztof Zanussi.
Tickets are $15 and can be purchased through ProArts (412-394-3353) or at the front desk at Pittsburgh Filmmakers, 477 Melwood Ave. For more information contact: Ann at 412-681-5449, ext. 206.
