Pittsburgh Filmmakers and Pittsburgh Center for the Arts Initial Collaborations Follow Quickly After Merger

(Pittsburgh, PA) — Pittsburgh Filmmakers (PF) and Pittsburgh Center for the Arts (PCA) may not have a name yet for their merged organization but that’s not stopping them from moving forward with combined efforts. The spring and summer of 2006 bring new, collaborative exhibition, education, and fundraising events and programs.

The first major, post-merger PF-PCA exhibition, From Intolerance to Understanding, will be held at both locations, from May 5 through June 9, and features photography by nationally renowned photojournalist Lynn Johnson. The Children’s Museum will also exhibit Johnson’s photos (including a photographic chronology of the life and work of Fred Rogers) as part of this event. There will be additional readings, workshops, and forums for educators throughout the city. Details to be announced on March 14.

Another major collaboration taking place this summer is the expansion of hands-on electronic media workshops for teenagers (ages 14-17). Having transformed a classroom into a digital media lab, eight separate week-length classes in digital photographic and motion picture arts will be held at PCA. The courses, developed within the Media Literacy Arts Education program at PF, include: Video Fundamentals (June 19-23 and again July 31-August 4), Experimental Video Art (June 26-30), Video Installation (July 10-14), Animation Production (July 17-21), Creating Original Digital Audio (July 24-28), Fundamental Digital Photography (August 7-11), Making Original Music Videos (August 14-18), and Performance Art and Video (August 21-25). For more information, call: 412-361-0455.

Wedding Crashers, on June 1, will be the first collaborative fundraiser/party and a celebration of the merger. Held at Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, one of the best wedding locations in Pittsburgh, the wedding-spoof theme is a natural as the two arts organizations begin a new life together. Wedding Crashers is open to the public. Tickets are $100 each. For more details, contact Amy Robeson at 412-681-5449, ext. 246.

"With all of the legal and technical work, it’s a relief to focus on programming," according to executive director Charlie Humphrey. "After all, it’s the programming that makes it exciting."
