Filmmakers Announces Makiko Miyamoto Exhibit

(Pittsburgh, PA) – Filmmakers Galleries will present a new site-specific installation, zoo of (in)animate by New York-based installation artist Makiko Miyamoto, on view from October 23 through January 3, 2010. The opening reception will be held on Friday, November 6 at 8:30 pm. It coincides with the Opening Gala of the Three Rivers Film Festival. Admission is $15.  There is also an Artist Talk with Makiko in the Galleries on Saturday, November 7 at 1:00 pm; admission is free on Saturday.

The installation consists of gauzy sculptural fabric, projected video and sound. Miyamoto says she is Òrevealing the hidden life of the seemingly inanimate objects around us.Ó Presented like a visit to a zoo, she uses informational placards to attribute personalities to the inanimate.

Makiko Miyamoto received her BA in product/craft design at the Musashino Art University in Tokyo and her MFA from SUNY at Stony Brook, New York. Her work focuses on creating evocative environments to alter the audience experience of the space and objects within it. Her innovative ideas allow her to transcend the borders of art design, architectural design, and interior design. She presents her installations both in art venues and in unexpected public spaces.
