Cassandra C. Jones Exhibition (Pittsburgh, PA) — This month Filmmakers Galleries will feature the work of local artist Cassandra C. Jones. Re-Animations, a video installation will be on view, May 20 – June 12. In addition a series of her color photographs, Track and Field: Drawing from the Arena, will be in the outer gallery, May 20 – June 26. Both exhibitions explore the nature of rhythm and euphoria. On Friday, May 27, 2005 a reception will be held from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. It is free and open to the public. Re-Animations features two silent works constructed from thousands of found snapshots. Snap motion re-animation uses like photographs, placed in a rhythmic order to re-create (or re-animate) a time-based event. Eventide, dripping with romance and cynicism, is a collection of 1,391 sunsets placed in a seamless succession. In this context it reveals a story about innate aesthetics and one grand universal tie that binds us. The second, In the Same Boat, is a re-animation of 1008 sailboats as they traverse and descend into the idyllic horizon. The installations, Jones explains, "were inspired by a quintessential snapshot icon that has been continually captured since the beginning of photography and still holds a significant amount of euphoric potency today." The still photos in this show, Track and Field: Drawing from the Arena, explore the idea of a place that nurtures energy. It is a space specifically constructed to promote the human heart to beat faster; conducive to broad movements and deep breathing. For the series Jones considered her 35mm camera a drawing device. "I went to the arena with the idea to render an architecture of deep focus, agility and the quintessence of cadence," she says. "It is a photographic expedition into the euphoria of the space itself, as if it had a lasting beat of its own." Jones earned her BFA at California College of Arts and her MFA at Carnegie Mellon University. Locally her work is included in the 2005 Pittsburgh Biennial, and has been shown at the Andy Warhol Museum, Space Gallery and the Three Rivers Arts Festival. She has also shown her work in Portland, OR; San Francisco, CA; Richmond, VA; as well as Canada and Germany. Filmmakers Galleries are located at 477 Melwood Avenue, North Oakland. Open Monday through Friday, noon to 5:00, and weekend evenings. For more information call 412-681-5449 or go to www.pghfilmmakers.org. |
