FOR
RELEASE FRIDAY, MAY 28, 2010
Interplay Opens June 25th
First Collaborative Exhibition of AAP,
Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and
Eight Artist Guilds
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — The first collaborative exhibition of
works by members of Associated Artists of Pittsburgh (AAP), Pittsburgh
Filmmakers/Pittsburgh Center for the Arts (PF/PCA) and its eight artist guilds
is scheduled to open next month as part of AAPÕs
Centennial celebration. Interplay
runs from June 25-August 22, 2010 at Pittsburgh Center for the Arts (PCA), 6300
Fifth Avenue. Eric Shiner, Milton Fine Curator of Art at The Andy Warhol
Museum, served as juror. The opening reception is Friday, June 25, 5:30- 8:00pm at PCA. It is
open to the public; a donation of $5.00 is requested.
ÒInterplay provides an
exceptional view of PittsburghÕs fertile and diverse arts community,Ó says
artist and Interplay Chair Connie
Cantor. ÒThe exhibition features compelling works by emerging and established
artists working across the full spectrum of media—from installation,
video, photography, sculpture, painting, printmaking, fiber arts and more.Ó
ÒInterplayÓ is defined as a mutual action, influence and interaction.
Artists submitted more than 200 works relating to the ways people, things or
ideas repeatedly act on and react to each other. Shiner selected 50 works for
the exhibition.
ÒIt was incredibly difficult to whittle the many works of art submitted
into a unified exhibition that clearly represented the essence of the showÕs
title,Ó says Shiner in a juror statement. ÒIn the end, Interplay, for me, became a meeting place of the highly talented
minds of PittsburghÕs artistsÉÓ
Associated Artists of Pittsburgh sponsored the three JurorÕs Choice
Awards. The CraftsmenÕs Guild of Pittsburgh, Fiberarts
Guild of Pittsburgh, Group A, Pittsburgh Print Group, Pittsburgh Society of
Artists, Pittsburgh Watercolor Society, Pittsburgh Society of Sculptors and
Women of Visions, Inc. each sponsored an award for the show.
The artist guilds affiliated with the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts
have a long and rich history with the organization. Some of the older guilds helped to establish PCA, then
called the Arts and Crafts Center of Pittsburgh. Today, the guilds continue to
plan an important role in the CenterÕs exhibition program, providing
opportunities for regional, national and international artists to exhibit in
its galleries.
The Interplay
catalog features every work in the show and offers a history of each guild, AAP
and PF/PCA. It is the first publication to bring this important historical
information together. The 28-page catalog will be available opening night.
