Pittsburgh Filmmakers Announces

Sound and Light Installation

(Pittsburgh, PA) – Filmmakers Galleries will present a new installation, ItÕs not quite the way by local artist Rick Gribenas, on view from September 26 through October 19, 2008. Running concurrently in the outer gallery will be new photographic and video work, Video Pictures by Todd Mattei. An opening reception will be held on Friday, September 26 from 7:00 - 9:00pm.  It is free and open to the public.

Gribenas is a media and sound artist whose installation incorporates video projection, sound, microprocessors, and light. Exploring the Òunheard,Ó and the edge between sound and music, images are juxtaposed with LED displays projecting light into the space.

ÒThe effects of a high-pressure street lamp might stand as an almost spiritual whisper to our nightly lives,Ó Gribenas explains. ÒScreen savers are culture, as is the rumble of sub-bass of a passing car, or the 16Hz rumble of a church organ.Ó

Gribenas will perform live with Cartune Xprez at 7:30pm on October 2 at Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. In addition, during his closing night reception on October 17, Gribenas will perform with Margaret Cox, Shambollish, and 8cylinder at 9:00pm.

Performing and exhibiting throughout the US and abroad, Gribenas has had solo shows in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Montreal, Copenhagen, Malmš, and Salzburg. He received a BFA from Edinboro University of PA and an MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has edited and published a book and audio CD titled Participatory Autonomy. He is also a member of a touring sound ensemble, Antennacle, with noise pioneer Eric Wood and tactical media artist Nathan Martin. Gribenas has been reviewed in Art Forum, Art in America and The Wire.

Todd Mattei is an artist and musician, working in video, photography, and animation as well as musical composition, production, and performance. He received his MFA from the University of Illinois, Chicago. He has exhibited, screened, recorded and performed throughout the country and internationally.

Gribenas and Mattei first worked together on a musical composition for Participatory Autonomy in 2007. This evolved out of conversations about their shared interest in the technologized landscape.
