Pittsburgh Filmmakers Announces
Bill Daniel Show
(Pittsburgh,
PA) – Filmmakers Galleries will present a new installation, The Great
Depression, by filmmaker and photographer Bill
Daniel, on view from October 24, 2008 through January 10, 2009. The opening
reception is Friday, October 24 from
7:00 – 9:30pm. It is free and open to the public.
With projected video, large-scale
still photography and several interactive installations Daniel will transform
the gallery space into a scene from a post-apocalyptic movie, complete with
hobo shack. ÒIt is an imaginary survival scene after an imaginary collapse,Ó
Daniel says.
In addition to the opening event
on Oct 24, there will be a multi-projector performance and music event on Dec.
6, and a closing screening event on Jan 10. This installation coincides with
the 2008 Three Rivers Film Festival, where DanielÕs film, Who is Bozo Texino? about hobo and rail boxcar graffiti, will be screened with
Craig BaldwinÕs film, Mock Up on Mu on Nov. 21. (Daniel is the cinematographer for Mock Up
On Mu.)
The show is a continuation of
Daniel's on-going Sunset Scavenger
project and his interest in wrecked landscapes and improvised homes inhabited
by boat squatters, freight train tramps, desert rats, swap meet guitar players,
and other homeless Americans. A wide variety of locations have served as venues
for Daniel's film and installation work, from urban rooftops and abandoned
drive-in movie theaters to Anthology Film Archives and the Independent Film Channel.
Daniel was born in Houston, Texas
and has lived and worked in Austin, New York, San Francisco, and Portland.
Daniel has collaborated with several artists from the Bay Area Mission School
art movement, notably Margaret Kilgallen, and has worked on multiple projects
with underground director Craig Baldwin. He has received numerous awards
including grants from the Film Arts Foundation, Creative Capital, the R&B
Feber Charitable Foundation for the Beaux Arts and a variety of artist
residencies. His films have been shown at numerous film festivals including the
prestigious Vienna International Film Festival, The Portland Art Museum's
Northwest Film and Video Festival.
