Two Shows by Women Artists in August (Pittsburgh, PA) — Filmmakers Galleries will feature the prints of Jessica Gogan and Carolina Loyola-Garcia from July 29 through September 4. An opening reception is being held on August 5, from 7:00 to 9:00pm. It is free and open to the public. Jessica Gogan, born and educated in Dublin, Ireland, currently lives and works in Pittsburgh. For 15 years she has been actively engaged in issues of art-making through her work at several art museums in Canada and the United States. This show, called Looking, (Inner Gallery) consists of three series of photographs. One is large-scale color digital prints of flowers shot in intense close-up and out-of-focus, and another is comprised of people looking at distant vistas. A third series is black and white silver gelatin prints taken at diverse locations in Pittsburgh. While many of her photographs were shot around the world, they capture a traveling mindset rather than a specific geography. Gogan studied photography at Pittsburgh Filmmakers and is currently an artist member. She received her Masters in Philosophy in Textual and Visual Studies from Trinity College (Ireland) and the Universite de Paris VII (France). In Stupid Consumers, Carolina Loyola-Garcia takes a satirical peek into the brain of today’s consumer society, questioning the role of industry and government involvement in people’s lives for the sake of profit and fear of liability. Her art, featured in the Outer Gallery, consists of digital-print posters of product instructions placed out of context. Loyola-Garcia says this will enable the viewer to analyze the irrationality of the process that "treats consumers as mindless receivers of products." She explores the role of language in this process as well. "International companies have embraced multiculturalism by becoming multilingual," she explains. Her work edits these diverse languages into one meta-language, where words no longer belong to one culture, viewer, or product. Loyola-Garcia, who received her MFA from Carnegie-Mellon University, is also an award-winning video artist, and teaches at Pittsburgh Filmmakers. Filmmakers Galleries are located at 477 Melwood Avenue, North Oakland. Open Monday through Friday, noon to 5:00, and weekend evenings.
