PCA Fellowship Winners in Media Arts (Pittsburgh, PA) — Pittsburgh Filmmakers and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts (PCA) are pleased to announce three local 2006 Media Arts Fellowship award recipients: Tony Balko, Olivia Ciummo, Charlotte Glynn - all Pittsburghers. Other Pennsylvania winners in Media Arts this year were Mary Vollero, Caroline Elizabeth Savage, LeAnne Erickson, Cheryl Hess, and Peter Rose. All eight were awarded $5000. The Media Arts category received 57 applications this year. Tony Balko, of Pittsburgh, received his BA in Film Studies from the University of Pittsburgh and has worked as an instructor for the Allegheny Intermediate Unit's Apprentice Program, teaching filmmaking to select high school students. His films have been exhibited in New York, Louisville, Nashville, Portland, Buffalo and Denver. He has also done film performances for live bands (Oneida, Modey Lemon, Midnite Snake). Olivia Ciummo, of Pittsburgh, received her BFA in Filmmaking from Point Park University, and has exhibited her short films and videos in the Portland Documentary and Experimental Film Festival, at galleries in Barcelona, Spain and in venues around Pittsburgh. She has worked with the Media Literacy program at Pittsburgh Filmmakers helping young people make original media art and soundtracks. She recently curated a compilation of women's film and video works called The Pageant. She is an Artist Member of Pittsburgh Filmmakers. Charlotte Glynn, of Pittsburgh, attended the film conservatory at SUNY (Purchase) College, in New York where she completed a short narrative film, as well as an award-winning short documentary on her relationship with her mentally retarded sister, Rachel. After college she worked in Italy and volunteered as an English teacher in India. After her year abroad she returned to the US in time for her sister's 21st birthday, and began expanding her short documentary into a feature-length portrait of Rachel's transition into adult life. She is an Artist Member of Pittsburgh Filmmakers. The Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Fellowships were announced in Harrisburg on February 6, 2006. This year awards were available in the following categories: Dance (Choreography); Folk and Traditional Arts (Performing Traditions and Apprenticeships); Literature (Poetry); Music (Classical Composition); Theatre (Scriptworks); Visual Arts (Painting or Drawing/Artist's Books/ Printmaking or New Technologies/New Genres); and Media Arts (Documentary and Experimental). The Pennsylvania Council on the Arts is a state agency whose mission is to foster the excellence, diversity and vitality of the arts in Pennsylvania, and to broaden the availability and appreciation of those arts throughout the state.
